The short version
This page covers this quest only. It is built from several launch-day guides, and where they differ we say so instead of choosing.
Against the Flow at a glance · sources
Where
Weeping Creek Valley, from the destroyed carriage up to the Mandate-held outpost
Sources label the quest differently: Game8 calls it Chapter 2 (its own steps also say "first chapter" in places), while Fextralife calls it the first chapter after the Prologue. Game Rant lists it after Weeping Creek Valley without a number.
Game8 Against the Flow Quest Walkthrough and Rewards Header says Chapter 2; some steps say the first part of Chapter 1.
Fextralife Against the Flow (Phantom Blade Zero Wiki) Position: the first chapter after the Prologue.
Game Rant Phantom Blade Zero: How Long To Beat & Chapter List Chapter list order: Weeping Creek Valley, Against the Flow, Steel and Steam; no details.
How we handle it: Only the label differs. All three put it after Reckless Pursuit and before Steel and Steam.
Step by step
Each step carries a mark. We give areas and landmarks, not every pickup: for those, use the collectibles page.
1. Start by the carriage and head upstream
You begin in Weeping Creek Valley next to the destroyed carriage. Climb the wall on the left to reach the first enemies. Reported· Game8
Follow the river. Expect Transcended enemies, and break stone carvings for Remnant Dust. A wounded escapee by the water asks you to save the village. Reported· Game8
Ring the first Bell, The Beginning, to reveal part of the map. Our saving and fast travel page explains Bells.
2. The ladders and the Lady's Rift
Climb the ladders by the waterfall to the Lady's Rift Bell. Reported· Game8
The Rift holds an optional boss. Fextralife advises leaving it until you are stronger.
Past the chain, an enemy drops the Hunter's Insight accessory, which Game8 ties to the Mind's Eye mechanic (single source).
Her dialogue options start side tales, so read them before skipping. Choosing the father or herbs option is what unlocks Flesh Lily and Apprentice Healer.
The Sanguine Twin dual blades are here or in the outpost step depending on the guide. Conflict· Game8
The Hunt boss page, with the fight details, is here. The Hunter's Chain Sickle he is reported to drop is on its own page.
Ring the Axemaster's Holding Cell Bell in the middle of the area before you leave.
What The Hunt does in the village · show
Fextralife has The Hunt standing on a rooftop. He launches away and says he will wait ahead. Game8 mentions a cutscene with him near the end of the quest and does not describe it. Reported· Game8
Rewards and what follows

Rewards
Rewards reported across the quest: the Sanguine Twin and Jagged Steel weapons, the Dread Axe Phantom Edge, the Hunter's Insight and Battle Wraps accessories, Remnant Dust, Sha-Chi Amber Fragments, a Blackstone Fragment and reforge materials. Neither Game8 nor Fextralife lists a separate completion reward.
The next quest is Steel and Steam. Game8 lists it as Chapter 3 and Game Rant lists it right after Against the Flow. Fextralife does not name what follows.
Exact counts and positions of every book and material in the quest are not given by a stable source here; use the Weeping Creek Valley collectible route for locations. Whether the valley guide's numbering matches in-game checklists is unverified.
