Phantom Blade Zero PC fixes: launch errors, drivers, unpacking and crashes

The one official fix so far: on NVIDIA, S-GAME says to roll back from driver 621.01 to 617.42 with a clean install. Confirmed · S-GAME Everything else below is labelled as a player report or as general advice, because the game unlocked only hours ago. The launch-day errors (SteamAPI, Denuvo, region firewall) have no confirmed fix yet: we list what players report, and nothing is guaranteed to work.

30-second checklist

In this order. Steps 1 and 3 come from S-GAME; the rest is general advice that is not confirmed for this game.

  1. NVIDIA card? Check your driver version. If it is 621.01 or newer, S-GAME recommends 617.42, installed with the clean-installation option. Confirmed · S-GAME
  2. Game on an SSD with room to spare: the install is about 145 GB. Confirmed · S-GAME
  3. Pre-loaded? Let the day-one patch (about 5 GB) install before you launch. Confirmed · S-GAME
  4. First launch: leave the shader compile alone. It can take many minutes. Reported · Reddit r/PhantomBladeZero
  5. Error box or game will not start? See launch-day errors. No official fix exists yet for any of them.
  6. Still crashing or black-screening? Work through the general steps below one at a time and note which one helps.

Not sure your PC qualifies? Compare it with the PC requirements (NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 6GB / AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT 8GB is the minimum GPU line).

Day-one patch and official updates

What S-GAME has actually published, newest first. There are no itemised patch notes yet.

Official updates · sources
28 Oct: Reason and Madness
S-GAME's 28 Oct Steam announcement, Reason and Madness, is mostly a personal letter from the creative director about the studio's history and the game's design. Its last section adds three updates: the day-one patch, a note that the non-ray-traced visuals were polished and the game was tested on mid-range PCs and handhelds, and the NVIDIA 617.42 driver advice. It does not list individual bug fixes.
Confirmed · S-GAME
Day-one patch (about 5 GB)
S-GAME's day-one patch is about 5 GB, with ray and path tracing performance improvements and bug fixes. If you pre-loaded, install it before launching; if not, your download already includes it.
Confirmed · S-GAME
Ray tracing off, mid-range PCs
S-GAME says it spent a long time refining the rasterised visuals so each environment keeps the intended art direction with ray tracing off, and that it tested the game on mid-range and lower-end PCs and on handhelds.
Confirmed · S-GAME
NVIDIA driver advice
S-GAME says it saw performance instability with NVIDIA driver 621.01 and that 617.42 gave the best experience in its testing. Anyone on a newer driver is advised to roll back to 617.42 with the clean-installation option and stay there until NVIDIA's next driver.
Confirmed · S-GAME
Patch notes
As of 29 Oct S-GAME's Steam news feed has no itemised patch notes: no version number, fix list or changelog for the day-one patch beyond the summary in the 28 Oct letter. We will add notes here when they appear.
After unlock

What this means for you. If you pre-loaded, let Steam install the patch before the first launch. If you downloaded after unlock, you already have it. The patch is described as improving ray and path tracing performance and fixing bugs; S-GAME has not said which bugs. A second, larger 67 GB figure is in circulation from a review-period update, and we cannot tell whether it is the same patch (see the conflict card below).

NVIDIA driver: 621.01 or 617.42?

Symptom. Unstable frame rate or other performance problems on NVIDIA cards after installing the newest driver.

Known cause. S-GAME saw instability with 621.01 in its own testing. The cause inside the driver or the game has not been explained.

Earlier advice
Before launch (26 Oct) S-GAME's pre-load post told PC players to update graphics drivers to the latest version. The 28 Oct post then named 617.42 as the better NVIDIA driver.
Confirmed · S-GAME
What players report
Players on launch eve reported: rolling back with a clean install (not Express) is what worked for those who had trouble reverting; some said an older driver such as 617.14 also ran well; others said a newer NVIDIA hotfix driver exists but nobody had confirmed it fixes this game. These are player reports, not an official fix.
Reported · Reddit r/PhantomBladeZero
AMD and Intel
We found no AMD or Intel driver advice for this game from S-GAME or the vendors. S-GAME's driver warning names NVIDIA 621.01 only.

Game Ready driver vs the developer's advice

NVIDIA shipped 621.01 as its Game Ready driver for Phantom Blade Zero, while S-GAME's own testing found 617.42 more stable. Both are shown; S-GAME's post is the only one that tests this game's stability.

How we handle it: We could not open NVIDIA's own driver page, so this rests on press coverage of the release notes.

How to roll back (general). Download 617.42 from NVIDIA's driver archive, run the installer, and choose Custom, then Clean installation. A tool such as DDU is an optional extra, not something S-GAME asked for. This is standard driver practice, not a game-specific step.

Players who rolled back reported that the clean option mattered when a plain install failed, and some said an older driver also ran well. Those are reports from 28 Oct 2026, not tested by us.

Steam "unpacking" and the 140 GB re-download

Symptom. Steam sits on unpacking for 20+ minutes, or a pre-loaded game starts a very large download when the game unlocks.

Known cause. Not explained by S-GAME. The official pre-load post warned that the pre-load needs far more free space than the install itself.

Install and pre-load · sources
Space required
Install size is about 145 GB on an SSD, and S-GAME asked PC players to keep at least 300 GB free for the pre-load process.
Confirmed · S-GAME
Players report
On 28 Oct (the evening before unlock) players in Steam discussions reported that Steam's unpacking step was slow and that a game pre-loaded on a roomy drive began a roughly 130-140 GB download again; one reply pointed at the 300 GB free-space note. Whether the re-download is a bug or expected is not stated by S-GAME.

General steps (not confirmed for this game).

Conflict · Patch size

How big is the patch: 5 GB or 67 GB?

Two patch sizes are in circulation. S-GAME's own post gives about 5 GB for the day-one patch. Eurogamer, quoted by players on Reddit, says a 67 GB update landed two days before its review embargo (performance, bugs, and boss, enemy, ability and weapon stats). We do not know if these are the same update.

Shader compile on first launch

Symptom. A progress bar before the menu that crawls for many minutes.

Known cause. The game builds shaders for your GPU on the first launch. Reviewers said it does not repeat after that.

Shader compile · sources
Reviewers
The first launch compiles shaders and takes a while; reviewers saw no repeat afterwards.
Reported · The Outerhaven
Launch-night reports
On launch night players posted shader-compile progress of 30% and 46% after about 8 minutes and called it slow. Reviewers earlier said the first-launch compile does not repeat. S-GAME has given no duration.
Reported · Reddit r/PhantomBladeZero
After release
After release, players in a Steam thread gave first-launch shader compile times of roughly 10 to 20 minutes, one said about 2 hours, and one said a high-end PC sat at 50% with no further progress. Replies offered no fix beyond waiting. DSOGaming had earlier described a lengthy pre-compilation phase followed by no major stutter during play. The reports are anecdotal and vary widely with hardware.
Reported · Steam Community discussions

General advice: do not close the game during the compile, and expect it again after a graphics driver change, which is how many PC games behave. That last point is not confirmed for this game.

Launch-day errors: SteamAPI, Denuvo, firewall, unreleased

Everything here comes from Steam discussion threads posted in the first hours after unlock. S-GAME has not yet addressed any of it, so these are player reports, not fixes, and none is guaranteed to work. We add a fix only when two independent sources agree.

"Unable to initialise SteamAPI"

Symptom. The game shows an error, so far seen in Chinese, saying SteamAPI could not be initialised and asking you to make sure Steam is running and signed in to an account that owns the game.

SteamAPI error · sources
What players report
On launch night many players posted in Steam discussions about a start-up error saying SteamAPI could not be initialised and asking them to make sure Steam is running and logged in to an account that owns the game. We have only seen it in Chinese. Players who tried restarting the game, Steam and the PC, verifying files, or a network accelerator said none of it helped. One player suggested clearing Steam's download cache or verifying files because it worked in other games; nobody confirmed it for this one. S-GAME has not commented, so there is no reliable fix yet.
Reported · Steam Community discussions

What is worth trying (general, not confirmed). Check that Steam is open and signed in to the account that bought the game, then use Verify integrity of game files. One player also suggested clearing Steam's download cache; that is a general Steam step that did not come with a confirmation for this game.

Denuvo: "The Server is not reachable"

Symptom. An error box that says to check your internet connection and click Retry, or a game that starts as a background process and never opens a window.

Denuvo error and regional firewall · sources
Error box
A player reported a repeating error box reading "The Server is not reachable. Check your internet connection and click 'Retry'", which they linked to the game's Denuvo anti-tamper check; the box also pointed them to a Denuvo page asking them to paste a long block of text. Verifying game files did not change it. No fix has been reported, and S-GAME has not commented.
Reported · Steam Community discussions
Firewall that blocks regions
Two players in one thread whose network firewalls block outbound traffic by country (one allowing only the US and Canada) said the game would not boot, with no error box and a process left running in the background, until they eased the block on a server in Ireland that they said belongs to Denuvo. A third player, in the UK behind an ordinary ISP router, saw the Denuvo error box with its copy-and-paste response code: in a separate thread they said pasting that code into Denuvo's page let the game launch. Ireland-region blocking is a lead, not a verified fix, and S-GAME has not commented.
Reported · Steam Community discussions

What is worth trying (general, not confirmed). The game's own message points to the connection, so test it on a normal home connection without a VPN or proxy. If your firewall or router blocks outbound traffic by country, two players in one Steam thread got the game to boot after easing the block on an Ireland-hosted server, and a UK player launched after pasting the Denuvo response code into Denuvo's page. If you try that, allow the game's traffic through, or open only the region in question. Do not switch your firewall or antivirus off. We have not verified which server is involved and we do not recommend adding addresses you cannot check.

Game shows as unreleased

Shows unreleased · sources
What players report
Some players saw the game still listed as unreleased in Steam while others could already play. In two separate threads, players suggested signing out of Steam and back in, restarting the PC, or simply restarting Steam. These are player replies, not a confirmed fix.
Reported · Steam Community discussions

Install or unpacking stuck at 1%

Stuck at 1% · sources
What players report
Players on launch night said unpacking or the install sat at 1%, in one case with an estimate of about 4.5 hours, even with the 300 GB of free space S-GAME asked for. One player could not cancel or uninstall while it was stuck. Nobody posted a fix.
Reported · Steam Community discussions

See the unpacking section below for the space requirement and for the re-download reports.

Closes right after the logo, or "device not supported"

Start-up crashes · sources
What players report
Several players reported that the game shows its logo or a small start-up window and then closes. Restarting the PC, verifying files and reinstalling were tried without a reported cure, and one player said updating to NVIDIA 621.01 did not help (S-GAME recommends 617.42, see the driver section). One player's crash dump on Windows 10 22H2 with an Intel 12th-gen CPU showed an access violation before graphics or Steam libraries had loaded; a second player replied "same". Another thread titled "current device not supported" had two players with that message. No fix is known.
Reported · Steam Community discussions

Antivirus false positives

We found no reports tying a particular antivirus (Kaspersky included) to this game. If your security software quarantines or blocks the game, add the game folder to its exclusions or allow the game, and leave protection on for the rest of the PC. Do not turn protection off to test. After unlock

Frame-rate cap, audio delay and hair

Settings and audio · sources
60 fps / 120 fps
Players on launch night reported the game staying at 60 fps. One asked why it seemed capped at 60 fps with no 120 fps option, and a reply said it was still locked at 60 after removing the frame rate limit; a second player in the performance thread asked how to get past the 60 fps limit and said different settings did not help. Another player in that thread set an FPS limit of 90 and reported 90 fps in the tutorial area, so a limit setting exists, but we do not know why some players stay at 60. S-GAME has not published the frame-rate options.
Reported · Steam Community discussions
Audio delay
One player asked on launch night whether anyone else's audio was delayed or out of sync with the picture. The thread had no replies or fixes when we read it.
Reported · Steam Community discussions

We found no reports of hair flicker yet.

Frame generation, sky glitches and slow updates

Each of these has been reported by one source or none. By our rule, a fix needs two independent sources, so none is listed as a fix.

Graphics and update reports · sources
Frame generation artifacts
One PC reviewer saw visible artifacts with DLSS 4.5 Frame Generation during very fast camera movement, blamed mostly on the Motion Blur setting; turning motion blur off removed the major artifacts. After launch an AMD player in a Steam thread said frame generation raised fps but looked less smooth, leaving a trail during sudden camera movements. These are one reviewer's test and one player's comment on different setups, so treat motion blur off as something to try, not a fix.
Reported · DSOGaming
Sky shows white blocks (AMD)
In one Steam thread, an owner of an AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT said shader lines did not load properly even on the latest driver, and two other 9070 XT owners described a similar problem on the sky, covered in tiny white blocks like a grid. No fix is confirmed and we found no second thread, so this is a single-thread report.
Reported · Steam Community discussions
Camera pointing up
We found no reports of a camera that points up or a similar camera bug in the Steam discussions or press we read. If you see one, it is not yet documented anywhere we can cite.
After unlock
Slow update download
We found no reports specific to this game about the day-one patch or later updates downloading slowly. The only download complaints we can cite concern the pre-load unpacking and re-download covered above.
After unlock

If you use frame generation and see trails in fast turns, switching motion blur off is cheap to try. One reviewer and one player describe it, on different hardware; it is not an official fix.

Launch crashes, black screens and stutter

No game-specific cause has been confirmed yet. These are ordinary Windows checks, listed so you can rule them out; none of them is an official fix for Phantom Blade Zero.

What we're tracking

Questions

Which NVIDIA driver should I use for Phantom Blade Zero, 621.01 or 617.42?

S-GAME recommends 617.42. Its 28 Oct post says it saw instability on 621.01 and advises rolling back with a clean installation until NVIDIA's next driver. NVIDIA released 621.01 as the game-ready driver, so the two disagree on paper; S-GAME's own testing is the only one that addresses this game's stability.

Confirmed · S-GAME
Why is Steam stuck on unpacking, and why am I downloading 140 GB again after pre-loading?

S-GAME asked for about 300 GB free for the pre-load, so check free space on the drive first. Players reported slow unpacking and a repeat 130-140 GB download on launch eve; S-GAME has not explained the re-download. Steam's Verify integrity of game files is a general step, not a confirmed fix.

Confirmed · S-GAME
How big is the day-one patch?

S-GAME says the day-one patch is about 5 GB. A 67 GB figure also circulates for an earlier review-period update, quoted from Eurogamer; whether they are the same update is unknown.
