Phantom Blade Zero combat guide: parry, dodge and Sha-Chi

Yes, it has a parry. The store page lists dodge, deflect and counter as the core of combat. Confirmed · Valve Parry blue attacks, dodge red ones, and watch your Sha-Chi meter. Reported · TheSixthAxis Reported · TheSixthAxis

The 30-second version

Everything here comes from pre-launch reports and reviews. Each point carries its own mark.

Does Phantom Blade Zero have parry? How do you parry?

It does. Here's what is official and what is press wording.

Parry · sources
Does it exist?
The store page lists dodging, deflecting, countering and striking as the core combat flow, so the game does have a defensive deflect and a dodge.
Confirmed · Valve
What reviewers call it
Reviewers call the deflect a parry: a well-timed parry is the answer to blue attacks, and Push Square calls the parry timings quite generous.
Reported · TheSixthAxis
What it costs
A parry costs no Sha-Chi and cuts into the enemy's Sha-Chi; plain blocking works too but drains your own meter.
Reported · Push Square
On Hellwalker
On Hellwalker the parry window is shorter than on normal, per a July 2025 preview interview with the combat director.

S-GAME's own wording is "deflect", so don't be thrown if the in-game prompt uses a different word from the one reviewers use. In practice: watch for the blue mark, tap the parry just before impact and follow up before the enemy recovers.

Blue, red and dark attacks: what to do against each

Enemy attacks are colour-coded, so the answer is decided by the mark, not by guessing the move.

Attack types · sources
Blue
Blue-marked attacks can be parried. You can block them instead, at a heavy Sha-Chi cost.
Reported · TheSixthAxis
Red
Red-marked attacks can't be blocked. You dodge them, and a precisely timed dodge sets up a counter.
Reported · TheSixthAxis
Dark
A third, dark attack type (the screen darkens) is reported to break guard and drain a lot of Sha-Chi.
Reported · RPGamer
Best answer to dark
Whether a dark attack can be parried, must be dodged, or is answered some other way.
After unlock

If you're unsure, a dodge costs no Sha-Chi, so dodging is the safe default until you know the pattern. Reported · Push Square

Sha-Chi, Ghoststep, guard breaks and executions

Sha-Chi is the system that ties the rest together. Some translations call it "killing intent".

Sha-Chi and punishes · sources
Sha-Chi meter
There is no stamina bar as such. The Sha-Chi meter pays for blocking and special attacks and drains when you take hits. Enemies have one too: empty it and they are left open.
Reported · Game Rant
Weapon swap
Switching weapons refills Sha-Chi instantly, but the swap has a cooldown.
Reported · GamesRadar+
Ghoststep
A perfectly timed parry of a blue attack, or a perfect dodge of a red one, triggers a Ghoststep: Soul slips behind the enemy for a punish window.
Reported · The Outerhaven
Guard break
Draining an enemy's Sha-Chi through parries and special attacks can break their guard and leave them open.
Reported · Game Rant
Executions
Executions exist: after slipping between attacks, you can finish an enemy with a cinematic execution.
Reported · The Outerhaven

Follow-up strikes

Heavy attacks
Heavy attacks charge a Power Surge that unleashes a strong combo which can't be blocked.

Phantom Edges in a fight

Secondary weapons you spend in the middle of combat.

Phantom Edges in combat · sources
How many
There are 25 Phantom Edges alongside more than 30 main weapons.
Confirmed · PlayStation Blog
What they do
Phantom Edges are limited-use secondary weapons: ranged shots, shield breakers, fire, summons. You use them as special attacks, not as equippable main weapons.
Reported · Push Square

Questions

Does Phantom Blade Zero have parry?

Yes. S-GAME's store page lists deflecting and dodging, and reviewers call the deflect a parry. Parry blue-marked attacks and dodge red-marked ones; a perfectly timed parry or dodge triggers a Ghoststep that puts Soul behind the enemy.

Reported · Valve
How do you parry in Phantom Blade Zero?

Time your parry just before a blue attack lands. A parry costs no Sha-Chi and drains the enemy's. Red attacks can't be blocked, so dodge them. Exact button prompts and timing windows are confirmed after unlock.
